If you’re looking for locally grown British Flowers then look no further than here in sunny Cornwall. There has not been such a high interest in locally grown flowers for more than 20 to 25 years. That was a time before cheap imported flowers and before the popularity of the ‘Flying Dutchman’. But times they are a changin’ to use a Dylanisum, the cutting of Dutch subsidies for their growers came just as the world slipped into global recession, put the two together and the result is higher prices for imported flowers. Coupled with higher demand from new markets in Eastern Europe and the results are record high prices for imported flowers like we’ve just experienced this Mothers Day.
If you’re thinking that must have been a one off don’t be so sure, in this country we live with rising costs in our day to day life every week, it’s no different in Holland, Israel or Outer Mongolia.
So how does this affect us? There has been a growing trend to ‘buy local’ across the country in recent years, with Fruit, Vegetables, certainly with Meat (no horsing around!) but also with Flowers too. Brides especially are becoming savvier and looking for locally produced flowers. So the table has turned! Too late for the vast majority of British flower growers who were put out of business some 20 years ago but a chance to survive for those of us left, remember only 10% of the £2.25 Billon, yes Billion, spent on flowers in the UK is produced here so there’s plenty of room for improvement. Despite the rising costs we can now compete with imported flowers on cost and of course what we grow here will be fresher and without the air miles!
This is why we are now working harder to increase the range of flowers we produce here at Highcroft Nurseries and at our partner flower farm.
